Denmark, in Northern Europe, and home to ancient Viking raiders is a contemporary and flourishing nation. The birthplace of Legos offers the vacationing tourist many adventures.

Denmark is well known for progressive social principles. Copenhagen, the capital, is a historical city with modern inhabitants located on an island, Zealand. While in Copenhagen you will find much to keep you entertained. The Tivoli Gardens are located here, along with the Royal Theater. A walking historical tour can be booked through History Tours. You can also rent headphones and take yourself on a self-guided tour of the area.

Sample the local delicacies at one of Copenhagen’s many sidewalk cafes. These café’s are very popular with both locals and tourists. Dishes to try include the smorrebrod, a time-honored sandwich served open-faced on rye; pickled herring; liver pate; and beef tartar. You will also want to sample Copenhagen’s many after dark theaters and bars.

Denmark is divided into four regions. Jutland is the European mainland. Funen is the birthplace of the famous author, H.C. Anderson. You can visit his childhood home in Odense. Zea is Denmark’s largest island, Copenhagen is located here. The fourth region is Denmark’s holiday island. Bornhom, also known as “Rock” Island is surrounded by beaches. Ancient churches dating back to the crusades are also located on Bornhom.

The Jutland region is popular with travelers. Denmark’s oldest village, Ribe, is located here. The Ribe Viking Center accurately portrays Viking life. Skagen, in northern Jutland, is unique in that you can be two places at once. At the Nature Reserve you can stand with one foot in the North Sea and one in the Baltic Sea.

Billund, also in Jutland, is famous for the Legoland amusement park. 1.6 million people visit Legoland each year. Rides, landscaped grounds, and large scale models of places such as the Royal Palace and Los Angeles are all part of the fun.

Denmark has two major airports. The largest is located 8 miles from Copenhagen in Zealand. The airport is at the tip of the island and a swift train ride takes you directly into the city. The second airport is in Billlund. Both airports are served by all major carriers including national ones—Finnair, KLM, and Scandinavian.
